Providing Continuous Innovation

Earning industry recognition for game-changing innovation

In 2016, our Director of Technology Development & Analytical received the Global Gypsum Award, selected by his peers in honor of his scientific contributions to the industry. He has previously earned awards recognizing his research, and he is well known for his ability to collaborate to find cost-effective and technologically innovative uses of raw materials.

In 2017, Global Gypsum named our plants in Shoals, Indiana; and Mount Holly, North Carolina; “Plant of the Year” and honored them with an award at a ceremony in Poland.

In April 2018, The R. W. Kern Center at Hampshire College used our products to earn Living Building Challenge certification. Generating its own electricity and collecting its own water, the R.W. Kern Center was built with materials primarily from local and regional sources and free of “red list” chemicals. The R.W. Kern Center was built using Gold Bond® BRAND XP® Gypsum Board, XP® Fire-Shield Gypsum Board, Fire-Shield Gypsum Board, ProForm® BRAND All Purpose Joint Compound and ProForm® BRAND Paper Joint Tape.

Additionally, we earned Vendor of the Year 12 out of the past 13 years from The Drake Group and are a two-time recipient of the Vendor of the Year award from LBM Advantage. We also won Affiliated Distributors' Supplier Award of Excellence in 2018.

MaX 12™ innovation delivers efficiency gains

Exclusive to National Gypsum, GridMarX® and MaX 12™ is the industry's best 12" o.c. optimized fastener pattern for 1-hour, single layer, metal frame, UL-rated assemblies.

An RSMeans time and motion study shows total cost savings up to $70 per 1,000 square feet driven by a 17% reduction in labor hours and 45% less fasteners.

Comparison of labor and materials efficiency

Chris Whitmire, Southwest Area Sales Manager for National Gypsum, championed the launch of MaX 12™.

“There is a direct relationship between jobsite installation efficiency and labor impacts. Less material consumed is a win-win for our customers and the environment,” Whitmire said.

Coupled with Gold Bond® BRAND patented GridMarX® installation guide marks, MaX 12™ gives contractors an advantage in the bidding phase of projects and profitability in the execution phase.

“We conceived MaX 12™ with the goal of dramatically increasing gypsum board installation efficiency for contractors and the program really over-delivered,” Whitmire said.

With installation guide marks printed directly on the face of the board, installers find the location of studs and the required fastener spacing more efficiently and effectively, with fewer misses.

GridMarX® and MaX 12™ add to the environmental advantages of Gold Bond® BRAND Fire-Shield® Gypsum Board, including:

We measure our safety performance—and are proud of our record

In 2017, our Total Case Incident Rate (TCIR) was the lowest in company history. Our safety managers work with other high-performance manufacturers attending and hosting plant tours to benchmark best practices.

Clearing the Air

We reduced the release of Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) compounds from almost 550,000 pounds per year in 2013 to just 1,181 pounds in 2018 through material substitution efforts.

Reducing waste throughout the product life cycle

Efficiency begins with product chemistry and extends through to design, installation and recovery. One of our gypsum sources is by-product gypsum recovered from the pollution control systems of coal-fired power plants. Our Gold Bond® BRAND GridMarX® products have printed guide marks on the surface to improve fastener installation accuracy and job site efficiency. In manufacturing, we employ a comprehensive set of energy recovery and conservation measures.

We are measuring our consumption through comprehensive metrics that tell us where to invest in energy, water and resource efficiency. We benchmark our resource consumption across all company facilities and process steps.
